How to Maximize Your Reading on Long Weekends

It’s almost the May Long Weekend, which in Canada, is the semi-official kick off to summer, even if all the snow hasn’t melted. To help you enjoy this first glorious three-day weekend we’ve come up with a few books that will fit perfectly into that time span.

But first, some math! According to an article in Forbes, the average person reads 300 words per minute and the average book page has 250 words on it (thanks Google!) so for the sake of easy calculating, we’re looking at a page a minute.

  • Time wise, we assume you start reading Friday night at 7 pm and finish at 11 pm. (4 hours)
  • Saturday you’re sleeping in and reading 10 am to 6 pm with 1.5 hours for lunch, bathroom breaks and snacks, then 8 pm until 10 pm (7.5 hours)
  • Sunday is another10 am to 6pm day but 2.5 hours off for chores, groceries (the stores are closed on Monday!) and eating. (4.5 hours)
  • Monday is the big one, 10 am to 6pm, 1 hour for breaks during the day, then dinner and finishing up 8pm to 10 pm. (9 hours)

For a grand total of 25 hours, which is 1500 minutes, and at a page a minute, is 1500 pages (give or take.) You now have several options:

1) 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami  + All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews

2) Dominion by CJ Sansom + The Bear by Claire Cameron  + Us Conductors by Sean Michaels   +   All Our Names by Dinaw Mengestu

3) The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton + Paris by Edward Rutherfurd

These are just our suggestions, what books are you reading this long weekend? Or better yet, what books would you read to take up 1500 minutes? Leave your comments below!
